Obstruction of Justice (another version)

An Atheist remix of Obstruction of Justice - it fits great, but only if everyone's into it.

A Big Wig showcase script, in which all Minions in some way make a mockery of the justice system, whether by falsifying evidence, ignoring votes, or blackmailing the expert witness into meowing like a cat.

Notes

When I was writing Obstruction of Justice, my hand kept floating to the Atheist button... because I think it fits! I'm conscious Atheist isn't everyone's jam so didn't want to put it in the "main" version, but if everyone's up for it I think this is a really good time, and the better version of Obstruction of Justice. Here are the changes that I made to get the Atheist to work:

  • -Town Crier, +Atheist
  • -Sweetheart, +Barber
  • -Evil Twin, +Cerenovus
  • -Organ Grinder, +Vizier
  • -Fang Gu, +Lord of Typhon

Atheist doesn't like the Organ Grinder because it's way harder to get social reads based on voting: Vizier goes on instead. Cerenovus on script deters players from just executing the Atheist claim, replacing Evil Twin which is a bit awkward with both Vizier and Lord of Typhon. Town Crier is useless with Vizier so it's dropped. Lord of Typhon adds more possible Minion abilities and gives players something to solve into - "too many loud minions and no viable Typhon lines" is a clue.

How to run: Atheist

  • If I run this as an Atheist game, I'm genuinely trying to make it look like there's an evil team in play! I won't be doing shenanigans or leaving loads of clues - the clue will be that someone is the Atheist, and that everybody is on the good team. Good luck!
  • If the Storyteller is nominated, they must appoint a defence attorney. Because the Storyteller doesn't have an alignment, that defence attorney must argue that it isn't an Atheist game.
  • The Vizier can push votes through on the Storyteller, and has every motivation to: they're either actually a Vizier and therefore win if the Storyteller is executed, or it's an Atheist game and they're not the Vizier so they still win if the Storyteller is executed. Be very careful! An Alchemist Vizier, of course, does not have the same problem.

How to run: Demon Cat

Here are my suggested rulings on how the Demon Cat should interact with characters on this script. Please note that I am not the Demon Cat's creator, and am not asserting that this is how the Demon Cat should be run in other contexts! But in the context of this script, here's how I see it:

  • Demon Cat / Big Wig: Meowing is not being mad that your nominee is good. That player is in contempt of court and might die.
  • Demon Cat / Harpy: Meowing is not being mad that the 2nd player is evil.
  • Demon Cat / Mathematician: Demon Cat has a weird thing where the target knows they're poisoned, so it's powerful to give the poisoned player true information they won't believe. The Mathematician can help track this, but also might not believe the player claiming to be Catified.
  • Demon Cat / Savant or Fisherman: The Demon Cat choosing the Storyteller is effectively asking them to poison all storyteller consult characters for one day. The Storyteller is legally allowed to just say "Meow meow meow" to the Fisherman for example, and this would count as the Fisherman ability working abnormally. However, it's a "might," not a "must," so the Storyteller can choose to break Demon Cat madness if they judge it will be more balanced or fun.

Furthermore, here are some storytelling suggestions for the Demon Cat. Again, this is purely my opinion, and Chiyu who created the character may disagree with me. Take these suggestions as specific to this script:

  • I recommend allowing the Catified player to use a player's name during online gameplay. For example, saying "Meow meow meow meow Ben" would be absolutely fine. This isn't strictly meowing, but in an in-person game the player would be able to indicate another player using body language or pointing when making a nomination or choosing a Big Wig defence attorney, and it's only fair to let them do the same in an online game as well.
  • As a Catified Storyteller, it's more important to follow the spirit of Catification on than make every single word a meow. It would be fine to break meowdness to tell players that an Organ Grinder is causing closed-eyes voting, or the day is over and a player has been executed. (Of course, if you can come up with a fun way to signal this through meows, you absolutely should!)

Fun interactions

Mathematician

The Mathematician counts how many times something actually went wrong due to the Demon Cat's ability! This means they might be able to confirm that the meowing player received true information despite being poisoned, for example.

Atheist

The ultimate Big Wig character! The Storyteller must appoint a defence attorney, who must be mad that it isn't an Atheist game. The nature of this script is such that a possible Atheist game hopefully won't be too tense: people will be meowing and having a silly time, and because there is no Drunk on the script the Atheist can be certain of their win condition.

Vizier

Vizier in a Typhon line is a real doozy! It's in the genre of, things you can only do very occasionally. The tricky thing is that with so many loud Minion abilities, it might quickly become obvious that the Vizier is part of a line - this means that Cerenovuses and Harpies might want to conceal their abilities for a little while. Please note that if the Storyteller is Catified on night 1, you do not need to announce the Vizier until the beginning of day 2.

Vigormortis

Let's face it, you're absolutely locking in that Demon Cat ability! Since the Demon Cat is permitted to choose nobody, it can be a good idea for the dead Demon Cat to stop choosing after a certain point in order to make town think they executed the Demon Cat, and then bring it back on final 3.

House rules or clarifications

  • Homebrew character: Demon Cat (character by Chiyu, translation by Blood-Drinker)
  • When prompting the Alchemist Vizier to choose again, you can just say "nothing happens," or "nope," or similar - you do not have to publicly confirm them. Likewise, feel free tell a failed evil Vizier to "choose again" if you want - I encourage you to be ambiguous in both directions.
